The Fbi's current spy and infiltration schedule "sounds like a Cointelpro to me," said a spry 76-year-old civil rights movement veteran.

Robert Keglar of Charleston, Mississippi was referring to an earlier Fbi secret schedule -- Counter intelligence Programs or Cointelpros -- that not only promoted spying on and infiltration of civil rights groups but often harassed activists and pitted them against each other, beginning as early as 1956.

"Of course, we had the state of Mississippi spying on us, too. And even secret citizens doing it. No one should ever forget the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission or the White Citizens Councils," Keglar said.

Spying on Peace Groups Not Surprising Says Civil proprietary Vet

The old trainer and boy scout leader's mother and her friend were tortured and murdered in 1966 for registering voters in Tallahatchie County; his brother was killed when he tried to learn what happened to his mother.

Cointelpro programs often made havoc of perfectly legal activities led by the learner Nonviolent Coordinating Committee or Sncc and other civil rights groups together with the Naacp, the organization that both Birdia Keglar and Adlena Hamlett belonged to.

As the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission, funded by the state's legislature one year after the 1955 murder of fourteen year-old Emmett Till, was initiated to ensure integration would not occur, old Fbi and military intelligence agents were hired to spy on Mississippians as the Commission came into power.

On the federal side of the guard coin, Cointelpros were initiated by the Fbi in the same year.

Private White Citizens Councils, formed one year earlier in 1955, were also a product of Mississippi's fight to verbalize segregation and represented the secret voice of the state's leading segregationists.

Councils members included leading bankers, attorneys, physicians, elected officials, chambers of commerce members, realtors and others.

Byron de La Beckwith, convicted for the murder of civil rights icon Medgar Evers, was a Citizens Councils member.

John Satterfield of Yazoo City, a Methodist leader and president of the Mississippi State Bar relationship and the American Bar relationship (for two terms), was a member, too.

Sovereignty Commission reports, first publicly released in 1997, are ready online straight through the state's agency of archives and include files on some Citizens Councils activities as well.

But Cointelpro files - if they were ever included in Sovereignty Commission's records - are remarkably invisible. Some Mississippians verbalize that thousands of Commission files were purged before they were turned over to the Aclu and made public. And that the Fbi, Sovereignty Commission and White Citizens Councils worked hand in hand.

"I've all the time wondered how the facts was passed on that pinpointed exactly where my mother and her friend would be at that exact time. Who was spying on them? Who told the Klan where they were going? Who knew what route they were taking?" Keglar asks.

The county's district attorney informed Birdia Keglar's son of the "car accident." But relatives and friends, as well as some "eye-witnesses," reported that she and Hamlett were run off the road, pulled from their car, tortured and murdered by highway patrolmen who were also Klan members. The June 12, 1966 crisis was never investigated; Mississippi group officials and the Fbi say no reports of the crisis exist.

Cointelpro Discovered in Pennsylvania Break-In

The existence of Cointelpro came to light back in March of 1971, when a group calling themselves the "Citizens' Committee to research the Fbi" broke into an Fbi field office -- ironically in Pennsylvania, the same state where current Fbi spying charges were lodged this past week - and then provided the press and discrete members of Congress with secret documents seized from that office, showing the government's involvement in criminalizing dissent.

While Fbi and police harassment were suspected by way of guard and infiltration during the 1960s, any talk of secret or risky Cia-type performance against domestic dissidents would have been dismissed as paranoid had it not been for the evidence picked up in this raid, according to Brian Glick, the author of "War at Home: Covert performance against U. S. Activists and what we can do about it."

Glick, a New York attorney and group justice advocate, is internationally known for his observations and writing on Cointelpro operations.

In fact, covert operations have been employed against those who speak out against the government throughout the Fbi's history (and even in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars), together with modern Fbi monitoring of environmental and animal rights organizations, close watch of anti-war groups by a secret Pentagon schedule and eavesdropping on domestic communications by the National security Agency.

The formal Cointelpros of 1956-1971 were broadly targeted against organizations that were at the time considered politically radical, as well, such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Within a year of the 1971 Pennsylvania break-in, old Fbi chief J. Edgar Hoover declared the centralized Cointelpro over, and all time to come counterintelligence operations to be handled on a "case-by-case basis," an legal Fbi statement that sounds all too customary following the more modern spy/infiltration discovery.

Back in 1971, Hoover did not promise that the Fbi would stop using Cointelpro tactics, and more secret documents were revealed straight through lawsuits filed against the Fbi by Nbc correspondent Carl Stern and then in 1976 by the "Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to intelligence Activities of the United States Senate," ordinarily referred to as the "Church Committee" for its chairman, Senator Frank Church of Idaho.

Millions of pages of Cointelpro documents remain unreleased, while many released documents were approximately entirely censored; just as recently released reports on the Fbi's infiltration of the Pennsylvania Peace group, many Cointelpro documents made ready to the group include lines entirely blacked out, production them unreadable.

Also in 1971, the Church Committee done that "covert performance programs have been used to disrupt the legal political activities of individual Americans and groups and to discredit them, using risky and degrading tactics which are abhorrent in a free and decent society," writes political scientist Howard Zinn.

Where Did Cointelpro Come From?

Cointelpro advanced out of the anti-Communist hysteria of the Cold War years, leading Fbi agents into taking actions against groups that had nothing to do with Communism. The Bureau would take actions against individuals and organizations plainly because they were valuable of government policy, Zinn writes.

The political scientist found numerous examples of free speech violations in which the Fbi targeted habitancy because they opposed U. S. Foreign course or criticized police actions.

Documents assembled by the Church Committee "compel the windup that Federal law promulgation officers looked upon themselves as guardians of the status quo." Zinn cites the guard and harassment of Martin Luther King Jr. As an leading example.

But Sncc, with its proactive philosophy, topped the list of targeted programs under "Negro radicals."

And when congressional investigations, political trials, and other customary legal modes of repression failed to counter the growing movements, and even helped to fuel them, the Fbi and police moved face the law, resorting to the secret and systematic use of fraud and force to sabotage constitutionally protected political activity.

"Their methods ranged far beyond surveillance, amounting to a home front version of the covert performance for which the Cia has come to be infamous throughout the world."

Fbi Headquarters confidentially instructed its field offices to suggest schemes to "expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit, or otherwise neutralize" exact individuals and groups.

Close coordination with local police and prosecutors was strongly encouraged. Other recommended collaborators included cordial news media, firm and foundation executives, and university, church, and trade union officials, as well as such "patriotic" organizations as the American Legion.

In his research, Glick uncovered a total of 2,370 officially beloved Cointelpro actions that were admitted to the Senate intelligence Committee, and thousands more have since been uncovered.

Glick lists four main methods used by the agents:

1) infiltration by agents and informers with the intention to discredit and disrupt; 2) psychological warfare from the outside, using "dirty tricks" to undermine progressive movements; 3) harassment straight through the legal system, production targets appear to be criminal; and 4) extralegal force and violence together with break-ins, vandalism, assaults, and beatings to frighten dissidents and disrupt their movements.

The lengthy list of activists advent under attack included Cesar Chavez, Fathers Daniel and Phillip Berrigan, Rev. Jesse Jackson, David Dellinger, officials of the American Friends assistance Committee and the National Council of Churches, and other leading pacifists were high on the list, "as were projects directly protected by the First Amendment, such as anti-war teach-ins, progressive bookstores, independent filmmakers, and alternative newspapers and news services."

It was Cointelpro "that enabled the Fbi and police to eliminate the leaders of mass movements in the 1960s without undermining the image of the United States as a democracy, unblemished with free speech and the rule of law.

"Charismatic orators and dynamic organizers were covertly attacked and 'neutralized' before their skills could be transferred to others and carport structures established to carry on their work."

Fbi documents were found disclosing six major legal counterintelligence programs, of which three focused on the Civil rights Movement with top priority given to the "Cointelpro - Communist Party-Usa, with its exact operations conducted on Dr. King, the Mississippi leisure Democratic Party, the Naacp, the National Lawyers Guild.

Also the National Committee to Abolish the House Un-American Activities Committee, Women's attack for Peace, the American Friends assistance Committee, and the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy.

Officially, the six major Cointelpro programs (with hundreds of cut off operations) were Cointelpro - Communist Party, Usa (Cp); Cointelpro - group Workers Party (Swp); Cointelpro - Puerto Rican Independence Movement; Cointelpro - Black Liberation Movement; Cointelpro - New Left; Cointelpro - Aim; and Cointelpro - White.

A label of "Black Nationalist Hate Groups," was the vehicle for the Bureau's all-out attack on Dr. King, Sncc, Core, the Black Panther Party, the Nation of Islam, "Black Muslims," and the National Welfare rights Organization.

The Socialist Workers Party and groups supporting or working with Malcolm X and the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam were also identified as targets.

Still others organizations were harassed:

The League of Black Revolutionary Workers, the Dodge Revolutionary Union Movement (Drum), the Revolutionary performance Movement (Ram), the Republic of New Afrika (Rna), the Congress of African People, Black learner unions, "and many local Black churches and community organizations struggling for decent living conditions, justice, equality, and empowerment."

Additional Cointelpro operations focused on the destruction of Students for a Democratic community (Sds), the Peace and leisure Party, the compose for course Studies, and a broad range of anti-war, anti-racist, student, Gi, veteran, feminist, lesbian, gay, environmental, Marxist, and anarchist groups.

Also the network of food co-ops, health clinics, child care centers, schools, bookstores, newspapers, community centers, road theaters, rock groups, and communes that formed the infrastructure of the counter-culture, according to Glick.

One example of Cointelpro-Communist Party-Usa harassment complicated 18 staffers and supporters of Kudzu, a pro-left, counter-culture newspaper produced in Jackson, Mississippi.

On October 8, 1968, they were attacked and beaten by Jackson deputy sheriffs. Newspaper staffers had already survived a conviction on obscenity charges, the arrest of salespeople, the confiscation of cameras, and even eviction from its offices.

Kudzu was put under direct guard by the Fbi in 1970. For more than two months Fbi agents made daily searches without warrants, according to the coordinator of Pen American Center's leisure to Write Committee:

On October 24 and 25, Kudzu sponsored a Southern regional seminar of the secret Press Syndicate. The night before the seminar the Fbi and Jackson detectives searched the Kudzu offices twice. during the search, an Fbi agent threatened to kill Kudzu staffers.

On the morning of October 26, Fbi agents again searched the office. That evening local police entered the building, held its eight occupants at gunpoint, produced a bag of marijuana, and then arrested them.... A Kudzu staff member commented,

"The Fbi used to be fairly sophisticated, but lately they have broken one of our doors, pointed guns in our faces, told us that 'punks like you don't have any rights,' and threatened to shoot us on the road if they see us with our hands in our pockets."

Discovered among these extra units was a unique Cointelpro schedule focusing on "White Hate Groups," at least on paper.

But Glick and some other researchers argue that Cointelpro-white appeared only to go after violent right-wing groups, and that the Fbi literally gave covert aid to the Ku Klux Klan, Minutemen, Nazis, and other racist vigilantes, under the cover of being even-handed.

Specifically, Cointelpro documents indicate that some infiltrators discreetly spied for years without calling concentration to themselves (like the Soviet moles or sleepers) while others acted as instigators to disrupt meetings and conventions or group and other contacts.

University of Delaware historian Gary May tells the story of slain activist Viola Liuzzo in "The Informant: The Fbi, the Ku Klux Klan, and the Murder of Viola Liuzzo," (New Haven and London: Yale University Press, May 11, 2005) who was murdered in 1965 at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan immediately after the Selma, Ala., voting rights march took place.

President Johnson kept close tabs on the investigation and when suspects were taken into custody approximately immediately, it seemed the Fbi was doing its job with extra diligence; federal informant Gary Thomas Rowe had infiltrated the Alabama Klan five years earlier and fast pointed out the suspects.

But Rowe's own role in the murder was suspicious, and it turned out that his experiences with the Kkk often related him with other notorious race crimes of the era, together with the Birmingham church bombing. As with some other Fbi informants, this one played both sides.

Agents spread rumors, made accusations, inflamed disagreements, and caused splits. "They urged divisive proposals, sabotaged activities, overspent scarce resources, stole funds, seduced leaders, exacerbated rivalries, caused jealousy and group embarrassment to groups. They often led activists into unnecessary danger and set them up for prosecution."

One base maneuver, known as placing a "snitch jacket" or "bad jacket" on an activist, damaged the victim's effectiveness and generated "confusion, distrust, and paranoia." The maneuver was used to divert time and power and turn co-workers against one another, even provoking violence.

"Jacketing" was often done by "carefully orchestrated series of news releases and newspaper articles ready by the Fbi and 'cooperative' reporters."

An activist could be falsely labeled an informer in "Fbi-composed anonymous letters" or in other operations, where the Fbi arranged for police to issue one member of a group that had been arrested together or to single one out for extra treatment, "and then spread the rumor that the beneficiary had cooperated."

A snitch jacket was used in 1968 against Sncc leader Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Toure) along with a "whispering campaign," to "tag Carmichael with a Cia label," Glick wrote, citing a letter from the Fbi Director to Washington Field Office, July 1, 1968 and memorandums from Washington Field Office to Fbi Director, July 9, and July 10, 1968.

Comedian Dick Gregory, who spent time within Mississippi marching for voting rights and face of the state raising money to help feed and clothe starving children in the Delta, was also the target of "covert maneuvers" to get the Mafia to move against Black activists ... And the whole leadership of the Communist Party - Usa.

Meanwhile, the Fbi's "main right-wing beneficiary" was the Ku Klux Klan, Glick and others say. In 1961, the Klan brutalized leisure riders as they arrived in discrete Southern cities, together with Jackson, with "advance facts supplied by the Fbi."

The Mississippi Sovereignty Commission diligently collected and kept this progress information. The names of civil rights advocates, their unblemished address, age, and name of owner or school attended were often collected and held in Sovereignty Files, some under the category name, "Freedom Riders Groups and Addresses, Group Numbers and Date Arrived."

The Fbi kept talking with Klan members. By 1965, some 20 percent of Klan members were on the Fbi payroll, many occupying leadership positions in seven of the fourteen Klan groups over the country, states political scientist Robert Goldstein in "Political Repression in contemporary America: 1870 to the Present," (Cambridge, Ma: Schenkman Publishing Co., 1978).

Finally, Sovereignty Commission staffers often shared files with Fbi extra agents running the Cointelpros, as evidenced by Commission files kept on targets together with the leisure Democratic Party and the Republic of New Afrika (Rna).

One Mississippi Delta Sncc volunteer says she was "exposed" no sooner than she arrived on the job in Holly Springs. An August 18, 1966 story in the Jackson Daily News held that Sncc volunteer Jo Freeman was a "professional agitator" citing "the Burns report" as its major source of information.

Five photographs accompanied the story, together with one taken on December 3, 1964 of Freeman speaking from the second floor balcony of the administration construction on the University of California, Berkeley campus.

When Freeman's Mississippi Sncc boss saw the editorial, he put Freeman on a bus back to Atlanta. "That thing makes you Klan bait," he told her.

Freeman assumed the Fbi was behind her touch in the Delta, even though she did not know about Cointelpro at the time.

"It had all the earmarks of an Fbi plant, requiring connections between California and Mississippi. My belief was reinforced when the Fbi's Cointelpro actions against the Civil rights Movement in normal and its persecution of Dr. Martin Luther King in single were revealed.

Further, old Cointelpro operatives report "the most heinous and embarrassing actions" were never committed to writing; the statement of retired Fbi extra Agent Arthur Murtagh who appeared before the take Committee on Intelligence, and who was interviewed by retired Fbi extra Agent Wes Swearingen in June 1979, serves as just one example.

Officials with broad personal knowledge of Cointelpro have been silenced, "most notably William C. Sullivan, who created the [Cointelpro] schedule and ran it throughout the 1960s. Sullivan was killed in uninvestigated 1977 'hunting accident' shortly after giving allinclusive facts to a grand jury investigating the Fbi, but before he could testify publicly," Glick states.

The report also noted that the center had cooperated with an Islamic organization in staging an event to promote insight between Muslims and non-Muslims in Pittsburgh.

"The documents say they were conducting some kind of investigation," Thomas Merton center director Jim Kleissler told Landay.

"That implies we were under guard plainly because we were against the war. Our freedoms are being undermined."

No surprise there.

As an eye doctor, I hope (and even at times, take for granted) that my diabetic patients understand the possibility of developing diabetic retinopathy. However, as a daughter to a diabetic mother who is in denial, the reality is that not every sick person with diabetes, despite education, accepts this serious eyesight disease exists. The frightening reality is that according to new research by an epidemiologist (Dr. Zhang, Atlanta), some form of diabetic retinopathy is found in approximately one in three diabetic patients.

An even more predicted statistic is that in the United States the whole one cause of vision loss in people age 20-74 is diabetic retinopathy. It is present more in men than women and in blacks and Mexican Americans more than Caucasians. That doesn't mean if you are a white female diabetic sick person that you are any less susceptible, especially if you demonstrate other risk factors such as a higher A1C level, elevated cholesterol or lipids, and a longer period of diabetes.

In fact, a modern study performed by a National Eye produce (Nei) ophthalmologist, Dr. Emily Chew, showed that diabetic patients living with type 2 diabetes for approximately a decade can sacrifice their risk of retinopathy by maintaining precise blood sugar operate and taking medications to lower blood levels of cholesterol and other fats. Dr. Chew and other researchers found that there was a 33 percent less likelihood that type 2 diabetic patients who aggressively reduced their blood sugar over a four-year period would produce retinopathy. An ideal level of long-term blood sugar operate or Hemoglobin A1C is 6.5 or lower.

Keeping along the lines of cardiovascular health, it is customary and supported by old research and studies that having well controlled blood pressure (whether straight through exercise, diet or medication) also lessens the risk of diabetic retinopathy.

I wish I could say that all diabetic patients that consequent these recommendations will not produce retinopathy but as in any type of rehabilitation there are no guarantees. Some of those unfortunate patients who adopt or adhere to the above advice may still succumb to retinopathy.

If you have diabetes and you are not currently following a regimen as described above, at least have a discussion with your former care physician or endocrinologist to see if it is safe and if you would benefit from such inhibitive treatment.

Either way, during your next dilated eye exam, which should be at least annually or more frequent depending on any whole of retinopathy, be prepared to retort questions with regard to your Hemoglobin A1C level, your cholesterol and lipids/triglycerides and ultimately your blood pressure. I don't know if my mother would be prepared despite my plea (I may be an eye doctor, but she still thinks she knows better as the parent) but I expect now, you will be!

This is my list of living with a spouse struggling with Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease. We are about 8 years into this. There is no known cure or known causes to date. My hope is to shed some understanding and my thoughts into what may lay ahead for person diagnosed with this type of dementia that is thinkable, to supervene a large part of the world's people within the next 40 years. Maybe reading about the nightmare we are dealing with may prompt person to get medicine as quickly as possible or give person who is already caring for a loved one, some relax knowing that they are not, by any means, alone.

My story starts out actually, when I was a young boy growing up in the 1950's. Ingrid Iverson or Ingie, as our whole house called her, lived right next door to us with her husband whom we never saw very much and we assumed he was bed-ridden or sick. They occupied apartment 5-F on the top floor of our five-story walk-up tenement construction on East 141st road in the Bronx borough of New York City. My brother, Billy and I, in our immature world mostly laughed and poked fun at Ingie's unusual manner and constant stares of distrust and paranoia. To say the least, we had no idea what Ingie what dealing with mentally and emotionally. I'll never forget her though because one day my mum had to go out so she knocked on the door on Apt 5-F and asked Ingie to come over to our apartment and keep an eye on one of my cousins, my sister, brother and myself until her return.

Throughout my what is now understood as A.D.D., hyper-active youth I was always a handful. I never missed an chance to show-off or act the part of being the "the little monster" - my oldest sister, Trishie, ten years my senior was always fond of calling me. So, to get attention, I had to act out the part - right? It's no wonder that I am an entertainer today. My sister, although in the eighth grade, by this time already had a few gray hairs from babysitting me and playing the big sister/nanny role as best she could - like the day I was let out some ninety minutes early from kindergarten. Let go, I decided to run off with some classmates and no adult supervision. We played and ran happily unattended throughout the front and back yards of structure in the south Bronx. Whoopee, what great fun I notion to myself, no adult or parental supervision!

When Trishie came by as she did every day on her colse to St. Luke's grammar school lunch period to pick me up at the usual noontime; of course, I was no where to be found. Luckily, she walked up and down the streets until we found each other before the cops were called to sustain in locating me. Boy, was she (and my mother) mad! I was never allowed to return to that school. Yes, I was a kindergarten drop-out! Before my mother's return that afternoon, with Ingie on guard over us, I took my chance and got into some terrible mischief and behavior pushing all the buttons I could to enrage her. Well, unbeknown to me, Ingie had grabbed a piece of wood she found in the kitchen from a piece of the back of a chair and, when she had had enough of my behavior and without warning, swung the weapon stunning me quadrilateral over my back. The blow nearly took my breath away from my sixty pound frame and needless to say her swift, surprising strike brought a sudden, eerie silence over that kitchen. I will never forget that blow I received that day but I was too shocked to even cry. And, I always wondered what made that 70-something women act so very strange and violently angry. It would be forty years or more before I got a clue that, as I look back, it is likely she may very well have been struggling with.A.D..

I met my wife, Joan, at a high school dance that I did not want to attend. I got an arm twisting order from my Mother, who was not one to take no for an answer, to go and chaperon Anne Marie, my youngest sister, who was a Freshman and I a Junior. That night led a five year romance and subsequent marriage that has lasted now nearly four decades. Joan was always a straight-A pupil scoring 1,350 (out of 1,500) on her Sat. She followed my lead and we both attended Hunter College in Manhattan largely because it was free and all we had to pay for back then was our books. Although I was pre-med and she a history major, we shared an elected policy together one semester. We were inseparable dating and her dream was to come to be a teacher. I wanted to achieve piano and sing in pop cover show bands. Joni student-taught in the inner schools of Harlem. Enthralling to Atlanta in the mid -70's, she raised our children in large part, by herself, as I followed my dream of making it big in the music business. I traveled the globe as a pianist-vocalist performing with bands in hotels and nightclubs. I was on the road a large part of the time for close to six years. In addition to growing up with an alcoholic father, this was yet another stress in her life.

Joan had a great scholastic resume beginning from her early days at Mount St. Ursula High School in New York City. She found a steady teaching position that lasted seventeen years before she was made significant of Our Lady of the Assumption School in Atlanta, Ga. While her years as a teacher,on the side, Joan climbed the steps towards a specialist degree, a Master's degree from Oglethorpe University and ultimately her efforts earned her a PhD. In the year 2000 attending night classes and summer school at Georgia State University. She garnered it all through sheer determination and grit.

Shortly after losing her mum in 2002 who, by the way, also had struggled with Alzheimer's Disease though into her late 60's, Joan began to perceive problems. The first warning or symptom, as it turned out, she noticed her penmanship was not right all of a sudden. The words she wrote were going off-line and she inherently knew that something was wrong. She sideswiped my daughter's car in the driveway as she was backing out in day and she left her purse behind at a local grocery store on one occasion. As most people's families responding to this type of thing we were slow, Maybe in denial, to get Joni's question checked out by a neurologist until a nearly very serious car crisis Joan incurred in May 2003 ended her time behind the wheel of a car. Luckily, the cars and not of the car's occupants took the brunt of the damage. She was recommended a psychologist who ran some written and verbal tests on her. She later underwent and M.R.I. And Cat Scan of her brain. When the results of those tests were analyzed there was little doubt that what Joan was a inpatient dealing with a non-specific progressive, degenerative brain disease - "probably Alzheimer's!", he said. A neurologist at Wesley Woods - part of Emory Hospital in Atlanta - confirmed the findings. Part of one of the tests Joni couldn't correctly draw the hands on a clock like we did in kindergarten studying to tell time!

That was pretty tough news to grasp. Here is a woman who is in her prime and had just graduated two years prior with a Doctorate degree! She was a revered instructor and significant of an Atlanta inexpressive school who loved her job and was so dedicated to the school, its students, parents and teachers. Who wanted to hear that dire diagnosis? So she valiantly and the rest of our house quietly, at first, tried to go on as if there wasn't a problem. However, this is something you can't hide for very long. Her co-workers were helping her all they could to get through each day. Soon everybody at school knew or suspected that Joni had something terrible. We lived 22 miles from Our day of the Assumption School where she had taught 7th and 8th grade Math for 17 years and was significant for 12 years after that. She never wanted to live close to school and be on duty 24/7. But, under the circumstances, I knew we had to move her closer to school now. However, it didn't matter to much because her days were already numbered.

When we first moved "in-town" form a suburb called Alpharetta, I would see her spending part of her days in the yard picking leaves, by hand, off the bushes in front of the house that fell from the large oak trees in our yard and putting them in a large yard refuse bag. She always loved the outdoors and putting in flowers after a trip to the local nursery. I remember being home with her those first days in forced retirement. She used to sit and cry on our back deck. I would try to cheer her up making lunch for her but I was not very successful. It broke my heart. She never wore the charm anklet that the Faculty had given her at her withdrawal luncheon at Villa Christina. Paretns and co-workers bestowed many parting gifts. everybody at the school was so very nice and thoughtful when it came to Joan. And, they still are.

People still stop me in the neighborhood and list to me some story they have of how Joan worked so well with them and their children years before. She made continuing impressions with parents as well as her students. I used to bring Joni to the Y.M.C.A. To walk and do some light exercises some years ago when a young man approached her and said, "Dr. Tiernan, I am a instructor today because of you!" She gave of her time unselfishly; even when she was Principal, she always spent her lunch break in the school bistro where she could be with the kids she loved so much. It would only be a few short years that I would need to find person to help me While the day administer to Joan - feeding her breakfast and a good lunch - at least part of the day - so that I could do my entertainment talent consultant event sales work at my company- which I have been lucky to deal with way before it was the "in thing" from my home for nearly twenty years. Patty Anderson is that special person that I now could not do without. She is a Godsend if there ever was one. Patty loves Joan like a sister and she sees to it that her mid-day medications are taken properly and that her is kept clean and well fed when I have to out or working in the office. Although Joan no longer can walk but a few feet at time now, Patty does some little exercises with her while she sits in her chair. Light weights to help hold her arm strength, stretching, etc. She has helped me care for Joni now for over two years. Without her here each weekday, I couldn't run my enterprise and keep it afloat. I also have an alternate caregiver, Dianne, whom I rely on for weekends when I perform. She is just great with her, too.

It was just a few short years ago that I would try to cheer Joni up by taking her to evening meal at a colse to favorite restaurant. She liked to eat the steak they served there. And in an endeavor to keep her active, I used to take her to a colse to Blackburn Park to walk for a mile or more at a time and get some fresh air. Joan was unable to take a shower by herself after just one year of her diagnosis. So I beginning bathing her upstairs but she was also becoming more agitated and wouldn't help herself to get out of the tub. We live in split level home with the specialist bedroom upstairs and so she recently stopped being able to climb the stairs. Patty would help her down the stairs in the mornings as I would spot at the bottom of the stairs as she descended with her. We have had to move the specialist bedroom downstairs so that the stairs were eliminated. We sponge bath her on most days and I can just barley get her to take a stand-up shower once a week. She no longer stands upright on her own. She takes a host of medications prescribed by her neurologist whom she sees only three times a year now. Believe me, it is a job just to keep up with making sure that we do not run out ad they are administered properly and without errors. These include: the customary Aricept, Namenda, Lexapro, Seroquel and Ativan along with a full compliment of daily vitamins we give her in an endeavor to keep her a long as we can. Joan had a seizure - luckily in bed one morning before rising about a year ago. Now she takes Depakote each night before bedtime for that not to reoccur.

So, before I knew it, Joan was doing less and less and wholly disabled right before my eyes and there was nothing I could do about it.. Our walks became more of a pulling contest than a walk. I would try to keep her up and Enthralling like we had walked together so many times over the last four decades while she would hold back and resist. Saying low and under her breath the words, "no, no, no!" I have kept a journal all these years that is basically a weekly list of what we have been dealing with here. I guess it has been cathartic as much as anything else to put down what were my current thoughts and I strongly propose to do this to anything going through a similar experience. Since I am an event planner and entertainment sales consultant in Atlanta, I notion I would get complex and begin to raise awareness. With a lot of help, I organized three every year auction/events so far with Atlanta's Ravinia Club, who were nice enough to offer the club to us for this endeavor along with Alzheimer's of Georgia. The funds raised for awareness to early-onset Alzheimer's disease go largely to families in need in Georgia who have a house member struggling with A.D. I am gradually losing my lifelong best friend. But, I count myself lucky to be able to give back, in the form of care, to a fantastic woman who gave so much to me, my house and everybody she touched in her life. We are both in our 50's! This was supposed to be the years that we would enjoy life to the fullest together. It just wasn't meant to be. Now we are playing the hand that's been dealt to us. When you go through something like this on a day-to-day basis, you wonder where you are getting the vigor from to keep going. I have always had very strong faith in God. I am sure that He is helping me and Patty too, of course. My son Jamie and my daughter Jennifer have also been very supportive. My son Jonathan, who lives in Charlotte, Nc also checks in with me fairly regularly. I pray over my wife each night before bed. I think it helps us both tremendously. My wife's gorgeous mind is gradually fading any way there is still that recognition that she has when I am in her presence. I can still feel and sense it. She hears us when we speak to her also and that is a great relief for us at this time. My daughter had our fourth grand child three weeks ago and she brought Murphy over to see Joan and I this week. We placed her in Joan's arms and she held her and I put her little head next to Joan's lips and she was aware. It was very sweet and touching. I know that it will be even harder for Patty and I when that awareness is also gone. For now, it is all about keeping her as comfortable as possible. Joan is urinary incontinent and so we rely on over-nights 24 /7 which work great.

I hope our story is a help to person out there who may have just been given a determination similar to Joni's. Now you have some idea of what is to come. A.D. Changes your whole family's lives forever. It takes me an hour just to get her to bed after feeding her each evening. We hope and pray they find a cure, of course, in our lifetime. However, one leading researcher at John Hopkins University curative School I heard recently quoted that we are"decades away" from knowing how the mechanisms in the brain yield beta-amyloid proteins that of course strangle, tangle and kill off nerve cells. Here is another thought: if you are colse to person at work or in the neighborhood that may need some help and is experiencing some of these symptoms, encourage them to visit a neurologist and get a diagnosis. It is a disease of denial and putting it off could make a significant unlikeness in some people.. My wife has lost her ability to speak so one can understand her over the last three years. I want my wife, my confidant back but I know that isn't going to happen. If you feel you that you may be at risk, you have a high stress lifestyle and you job that is taking all things out of you, try to get allowable rest each night, and take daily vitamins - especially B and D. And if you are person you know has any of these symptoms, run do not walk to your nearest neurologist and get it checked out.. My two cents on this disease as an observer, is daily rehearsal and walking is a great idea. In my view, sleeping 8 to 9 hours a night and eating a well-balanced diet is also a must if you are to any chance of avoiding or postponing this condition - especially if it genetically in your house tree's history already. I am sure that there is another report coming down the road as a sequel to this one. Look for it.

Without twisting up our tongue this time, Xavier Cugat brought his work on to American audiences straight through a rich musical heritage that began in Spain and by 1905, landed him in Cuba. His humble beginnings as a trained violinist led him to originate an curious musical sound that spread like wildfire to Latin-American dance floors. He is credited with taking beloved Latin music to new heights for dances like the Cha Cha, Mambo, Rhumba, Tango, "Latin Hustle, too." Coincidentally, the last three dances were so beloved that they were mentioned in the first-rate Disco group Chic's hit song, "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah)."

Hollywood was growing ever more glitzy by introducing film stars such as America's funniest redhead-Lucille Ball-who straight through comedy, later claimed her share of the television broadcast market. Hit shows like "I Love Lucy" put Lucy and her musician-husband Desi Arnaz into Tv's limelight. Shows like this featured a wide variety of musicians that made contributions to Hollywood, like Desi Arnaz and Xavier Cugat.

In 1918, Cugat traveled to the United States to work in film with his superb band. It featured a young, pre-Lucille Ball Desi Arnez and other predominant Cuban musicians. By 1920, Cugat moved to Los Angeles to achieve his spicy shows that often featured beloved singers like Rita Hayworth, who he once helped to get a starring role in a movie. Having been known as a ladies man, his third wife, Abbe Lane Cugat, starred in nine motion pictures during a amazing Hollywood movie vocation that spanned from 1930 to 1959. Not even "Cuchi Cuchi" diva Charo: the international film and television star, songstress, guitarist and dancer, could not resist Cugat's charm. She became his fourth wife in August of 1966; he was 66 years young. After Cugat discovered Charo, the amazing Salsoul Orchestra collaborated on her first four albums. After releasing dozens of tracks over the course of 75 years, Cugat's heritage encompassed needful forays into the Hollywood movie world during the '40s and '50s. Cugat completed his 'circle of life' in America, and in 1970 he moved back to where it all began for him, Spain. The newfound popularity of Salsa was taken to other level by Fania Records. This is not a perfect listing. So where did such an curious music style like Salsa get its roots? That's a great question; for that, there too is an answer. This infectious music known as Salsa was legitimately an amalgamation of Afro-Cuban, American, and Puerto Rican flavors of Bomba, Jazz and Merengue. straight through tons of performances and recordings, Salsa took on a unique form and shaped itself into a dominant music style. If you have ever been told that you have a great voice, then you may have plan of making use of that great voice in a professional way - as a singer, announcer or as a voice over talent. Voice over, or adding your voice to advertisements and recorded messages, can be a very lucrative field for a trained talent.

In the commercial world all kinds of voices are needed: low voices, whiny voices, gravelly voices, flat voices and even median voices. So, even if you don't have a classic "good voice" you can enter the field if you have determination.

First, contemplate your instrument. Not just your voice, but your whole being. Do this by taking an acting and/or improvisation class at your local college/learning annex/community center. Stay with it for 3 months. Aside from freeing yourself up, you'll probably meet some fun people.

Why acting classes? You need to know how to originate the characters who "speak" in a commercial. Just taking an animation class won't do it. You need to start the process organically. It's not about the voice, just yet, it's about the intention behind the voice that gives the voice a shape.

After you've opened yourself up for three months in an acting class, it's time to move into specifics with a voice over class.

This is where I'll begin to speak to two types of people: Those who want to move to L.A., New York, Atlanta, Chicago, or San Francisco and pursue a union voice over career, and those who want to originate an internet voice over career right there in Smalltown, Usa. For simplicity sake, we'll refer to them as Red state and Blue state... Actually, I think City (union) and Country (non-union/internet) might be better.

City:

This part should be very easy for you. Just do a hunt for "Voice Over Class" and "your city" with Google. Of course, there may be classes offered at your local universities and performing arts centers. Ask nearby for good word-of-mouth about them. Then sign-up with the best and attend! (Avoid classes that end with you paying an additional one 00 for a demo reel).

Country:

Here's where you will find some challenges. Try your local college/learning annex/community centers to see if one is offered. Most citizen want to skip this whole part and get right to the money making part. Believe me, if you skip this part, no one will want to pay you for what you'll be offering. Ego and trust are not a substitute for talent and technique.

Finding Your Range And Niche

Once you've gotten a handle on your voice, you need to know what your range is and, by association, what your market is.

Are you the classy Bmw voice, the GenX hamburger guy, the Don Pardo game show host? You could be all three and more. Knowing all that you can do will help you promote yourself with trust and direction.

Start with your general speaking voice. What does your coach say? Are you the "everyman" voice? The "hip, edgy" voice? The "natural announcer" voice? Whichever comes the easiest may be your bread and butter. foster it. What you and your coach rule will become the centerpiece of your promotion.

But don't stop there! Now start stretching your voice. Try accents, character voices - both broad and subtle (this is where the acting classes come in handy). Anyone you can do with your voice may be called upon for any one of the separate voice over market niches out there!

Here are the main areas you might find work:

Radio/television commercials
Promos/trailers
Business narration
Cartoons
Ivr/voice mail greetings
Web audio

If you're Country you probably won't get much cartoon work and if you're City you probably won't get much Ivr/voice mail greetings work. But All of these areas may require Any Type of voice style! So, the broader your range, the broader your work potential.

This is an prominent step. It is here that you rule your whole approach to your career, either it be City or Country.

For example, you have a gravelly, low voice that's warm. You might sell yourself as the "Your Bourbon Straight-Up voice". Or you have a super-sweet female voice you would be "The Voice of a Princess", etc.

It also helps to know what celebrities you sound like. See what kinds of commercials they perform voice over on. Listen closely, Alec Baldwin, Keifer Sutherland, Stockard Channing, Susan Sarandon - they all do voice overs.

You may want to specialize. For City folks, you can find an animation class or a promos class. Country folk will have to do a bit of self-teaching here. Read Terri Apple's making Money in Voice Overs.

Start collecting copy (scripts) that fit your style. Even within your style there are sub-styles. Cover them all. Also look for copy that best shows your other "stretch" voices. This all will lead up to making your demo reel.

The company starts with your demo reel...

The Demo Reel

Here is where it gets complicated and potentially expensive. If your going the Cityroute, you'll want to ask nearby as to where to get your demo done. Where do other voice over actors go for theirs? How does their demo sound? And, of course, what's the cost? If it sounds too expensive, than it is.

For City folk, the demo is primarily used to get an agent. That's about it, as most clients/jobs/gigs will come from auditions you'll do at the department or local casting facility.

For Country folk, your demo(s) will continually be your selling tool on your website. You will probably want to have one for each of the markets I wrote about previously. And getting your reel done will be hard at first. In some geographical areas, there won't be anybody who can edit them for you, let alone offer good direction. But that's where your career will differ from City folk. I'll talk more about this in a moment.

Let's start with the basics for both City and Country folk.

Your demo shouldn't be longer than a minute. Yes, a minute! Others will say 2 minutes, but no one listens that long unless you have So Many separate voices.

Each clip on your reel should be no more than 15 seconds, probably less.

Each clip should show something New about your voice.

The clips should get shorter the longer the reel goes so the pace quickens.

Your demo should only consist of things appropriate for that market! i.e. Commercials for a commercial demo, cartoon voices for a cartoon demo, narration for a narration demo.

City folk will probably only need a commercial demo and a Narration demo (and Cartoon demo if they do funny voices).

Country folk should have a demo for each market listed previously.

So, the City folk have their reel and are ready to find an agent. Go ahead and skip to seeing An Agent.

Country folk, you have some work cut out for you!

In order to have a home voice over studio business, you are going to have to learn to report yourself, edit your recording and burn Cds and also upload them to the internet. This is something you'll be doing every day.... You might want to read this paragraph again.

The semi upside of this is that you will get to edit your own demo reels and save money. But, money that you will have already spent on your equipment!

Building Your Studio

This is where your company comes to life! Here's what you'll need:

A closet or sound booth.
A microphone.
A mixer (optional).
A pre-amp (optional).
Headphones.
A music stand and a microphone stand.
A computer optimized for audio recording (processor/Ram).
A sound card or ProTools mBox.
A software program or ProTools.
Monitor Speakers (for precise sound editing).
A website and Dsl or Cable Broadband!

All this will require two other citizen (Helpers): One helper who knows about audio tool and recording software (your musician friend, most likely, or the Guitar center employee), and a web designer who can originate your site and teach you how to upload audio.

Let's break this down:

A Closet Or Sound Booth

When you're beginning out, you'll want to watch your money, so a sound booth shouldn't be considered. They usually run about ,200 or more.

However, a closet is all the time easy to convert. You need a space that is away from the plumbing (so you don't report the toilet flush!) but close to your computer. Carpeting the walls of the closet so you don't get your voice bouncing around, giving that echo-ey sound to your recordings. You can buy studio insulation, but carpet's much cheaper.

A Microphone

You essentially want a microphone that records voice well. There are many out there. I use an Akg 414 and it cost me 0 on eBay. If you go to your local music store and let them know what you're doing, they should be able to guide you towards something right for your situation. Then check eBay for best prices!

Ideally, you'd want to find man who will come out to your house and help you put the whole studio together for a small fee (around 0) or free (buy them lunch, though).

A Mixer

Someone who knows how to make a good martini... Wait, sorry. I mean a mixer is good for being able to operate your mic and headphone volume when you're in the booth. It will also be needed if you rule to add a phone patch (a way to have man on the phone to hear you report while they offer direction).

(A side note: You may hear about Isdn as a way of recording your voice remotely to some far away studio. The cost of tool and facility is not worth it at this stage of your career. Wait a bit, as the technology is inviting towards voiceover internet protocol [Voip] which will render Isdn outdated.)

A Preamp

This juices up your mic and can also warm your voice prior to being recorded, salvage some Eq-ing time later. This is something to discuss with your Helper.

Headphones/Music Stand/Microphone Stand

If I have to elaborate this, you might want to think about an additional one career...

Computer/Software

Get a Mac. Any Mac that's a G4 or G5 with 1 gig of Ram. (Yeah, I'm partial to Macs). If you want to go an additional one way (Not Mac?!?) then talk again with your Helper. If you are not good with computers, this could become a stumbling block for you.

If you have a computer, you might be able to use it. Talk with your Helper as to which sound editing application to use. (You'll need some tutoring from them initially). Knowing which program to use will help rule if your computer has enough processing power to handle voice recording.

Sound Card/mBox

Some computers already have a sound card installed. Ones that don't will need one, or you can get an mBox, a sort of external sound card. Mbox runs about 0 and includes the software, ProTools. Again, talk to your Helper.

Monitor Speakers

Make sure you get some monitors. The main dissimilarity between monitors and regular speakers is that they don't pump up/beautify the audio. You want to hear exactly what you sound like, not the best-case scenario. I use Roland Micro monitors. They're reasonable and accurate. Don't use your internal computer speaker!!!

Website

And here is the monster! If you don't do web institute (as I do), you want to find man who won't payment an arm and a leg.

First, rule what you'll want on your site. You'll need to introduce yourself and your style. You'll need your demos on there. You'll want some instructions on how clients can work with you. Check out your competitor's websites. What do you like about theirs, what don't you like. Then, see if there are any website templates that could be customized to fit your needs. Going to a web designer with a template, aside from bumming them out, will save you lots of hours and money.

(Side note here: Make sure your designer makes your site optimized for hunt engines. Google "Seo" to see the ocean of info on this.)

Now that you've bought all your equipment, installed it, learned the software and built your website, it's time to edit your own reels!

Yup, you can do it yourself. Listen to all the reels out there. Which ones work for you? Why do they work for you? Implement those techniques with your reels. If you've been practicing your voice over, taking classes, etc., then you should be fine with creating your own reels. You hear Tv and radio ads all the time. Do yours sound like those? It can be that easy.

You'll also want to find some royalty free music to put underneath the spots you created. In all honesty, you can use Anyone since you're not selling the demos.

Update your demos often as you get real work.

If you're uncertain about how your demo is sounding, get feedback from citizen you respect. But, take all the input with a grain of salt. It's Your demo after all.

But most importantly: Just do it. Most Country folk get stuck right about here. Will you?

Finding An Agent

For City folk, this is the hardest part. Not that the act is difficult, but the perseverance required is enormous. It may take you several mailings, meetings, etc. To land an agent. The most prominent thing to remember is "don't give up"!

First, container your Cd so that it represents you, your product, what you're selling. Make it catchy. You want to grab their eye so they'll want to pop your Cd in the player.

Get the department list from your local Sag (Screen Actors Guild) or Aftra (American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) office. Mail that Cd with a Short intro letter to every V.O. Agent out there.

Also, ask your friends whom they are with. See if they'll take your Cd into their Vo agent. Ask your Vo teacher for a referral. Ask your barber! Anybody!

In the interim, send your Cd to all the non-union voiceover auditions you find online or in your local trade paper. In L.A. And Ny you would check out Backstage and Actors Access.

For Country folk, you'll want to sign up with many agencies in many cities. They'll email you auditions, and you'll email your mp3 back.

I could list agencies here, but they turn a bit over time. I propose Googling "voice over agency". There are also two major pay websites. They get the majority of non-union Vo auditions. They also have 1000s of voice over artists like you. Voice123 and Voices.com. The are the gorillas in the room that take every person on who pays. This results in 1000s of actors for each job posted, though they do use some algorithms to help keep it semi-reasonable. Avoid websites that will payment to list your site, but not offer daily auditions. For the most part you're throwing your money down the drain.

Country folk, your biggest challenge now is to get clients. Focus on getting your website seen (pay-per-click with Google and Yahoo) and sending your link to all the local associates in your town. They'll be happy to know they don't have to go far to get a professional voice over for their commercial or in-house narration.

These are essentially the steps I took to start both my Country and City careers. There are hundreds of minute details to all things I've mentioned. My intent was not to hold your hand straight through the process, but to give you an overview in a simple, uncomplicated way. Half of being good at this is the quality to learn on the job. The other half is the preparing (classes, reading, practicing).

There will be those citizen who will want an report to show them an easy way right to the money. Well, there is no easy way. But I've shown you some practical steps to get you into the game. What you do when you get into that arena is up to you. You can take a seat and watch or you can frame out how to get onto the field. It's separate for everyone. But, the opportunity is there. It's real.

His mom Ms. Lydia works for the Atlanta institution & Visitor's Bureau. Both she and Miss Jean can keep getting the big birds too, as long as their taste buds approve of the transaction.

On our next stop, you'll see that cultures from the Pacific Rim have plentifulness of engaging offerings with regards to the consumable entertainment they produce, too.

Similar to us westerners, Asian food and entertainment go well together, just like popcorn and movies. One American network calls it "Dinner And A Movie." Speaking of cutting-edge weapons, New York's Wu Tang Clan uses one as a logo. What appears to be a rounded, sharply bladed, boomerang/disk is unquestionably the "W" in Wu Tang. From finding at the weapon however, I don't think I'd be likely to wake up some morning with a thought of getting cut by one of those things. Ever.

There are those 'action movie heads' who would agree that some pretty engaging films highlight martial arts. Back in the 70s, we called them "Kung Fu movies." After Carl Carlton busted out with the hit song "Kung Fu Fighting," I built myself a pair of chuck sticks. But after a few displaced pops to the back of the head, I retired them. Alas, my dreams of becoming a 'Samurai Ninja Martial Arts Fighter' were shattered; but that was great than having a self-inflicted busted cranium. I went on to other things; mainly, watching martial arts movies. By the way, that minute's 'bout up. If you know the deal, you can keep on reading. If you don't know, you might want to ask somebody, get a map, or keep on reading, too. Whatever's clever!

It's no underground that cultures like the Chinese have been known for their long-standing empires. They also advanced a very disciplined way to defend their 'valuable assets' that were stored in huge, heavily protected fortresses. Martial arts gave fighters an occasion to go mano-a-mano in sometimes brutal displays of precision and brute strength. This Spanish term is also known as hand-to-hand, head-to-head, one-on-one, and singular combat.

Historic teachings show that great forces were often referred to as being god-like. Some were also referenced straight through vicious man-killing beasts such as lions, tigers and bears. Oh my--did you know that aged Chinese dynasties advanced many institutions or schools of thought and defense? Some were based on a mystical mammal known as the dragon. One group that acknowledged "the way of the dragon" broke ground by doing it all. Setting up a great and powerful Hip-Hop dynasty along the way, they've been long known for their tight embrace on the discipline of building rock-solid empires. Pioneering Hip-Hop supergroup Wu Tang Clan has built upon their image of being an invincible clan of talented Mcs and producers. Chief knob-twister Rza orchestrated the rise of an original, three-man group; an whole planetary movement followed.

Originally synergized straight through a nucleus composed of Rza, Gza and the late Ol' Dirty Bastard, the Wu Tang Clan produced sound recordings with themes based on Hong Kong's martial arts and Samurai movies. Along with references to the Five Percent Nation, strategic moves, chess and other thematic branch matter, the work on of aged Chinese dynasties flowed straight through The Clan like a river.

Soon after the original members crunk up the machine, more warriors jumped on board. The Wu Tang Clan ended up with 9 Mcs, to qualify for labeling as a Hip-Hop supergroup, just on G.P. (general principle). As a producer, Rza later got a bigger break by acting in, but more importantly, composing music for the soundtrack of Forrest Whitacker's "Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai" and "Kill Bill, Volume 1." (I wonder if he can hook me up with Lucy Liu and her friend from the Crazy 88's.) These movies have some great on-location scenes, and the fighting sequences are just what the physician ordered. To kick off 2007, Spike Tv offered up some new programming content. On New Year's Eve, they unveiled "Afro Samurai," featuring Samuel L. Jackson as a 'superior fighting intellect.' The great and powerful Rza popped up once again, doing the music. This concoction totally made sense to me, by this point. Originating in the Far East, martial arts flicks somehow found a home in the world of American Rap music. It's no doubt that Bruce Lee is the #1 martial artist to work on the 70s film world. Americans like Chuck "Walker, Texas Ranger" Norris, John Saxon, and Karate-chop brother Jim "Black Belt Jones" Kelly became martial arts film stars; even basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar got a piece of the action in Bruce Lee's personal project, "Game Of Death." When Lee got offered crazy money to star in the first Hollywood-backed martial arts film ("Enter The Dragon"), he did what any red-blooded entrepreneur would have done: he put the brakes on his project and began production on the new movie.

It became the biggest allocation film in this genre's history, and featured a young Jackie Chan as a stuntman. Bruce Lee's untimely death, however, closed out an leading lesson of martial art's epic rise to fame, but Rap artists like the Wu Tang Clan used samples from "Enter The Dragon" on their debut album, occasion up a whole new episode. Both of Bruce Lee's final martial arts films went on to spread the word about this growing faction of the movie and music (more plainly put: entertainment) industries. Rap artists listened and responded; they would 'holla back' in their own unique, urban way.

On Tv, David Carradine starred in the long-running, "Kung Fu." From Belgium, Jean Claude Van Damme made his mark in 'the arts,' too. While Jackie Chan headed into a 'funny-bone' crushing direction with comedian Chris Tucker in "Rush Hour," Jet Li got serious with Aaliyah and Dmx in "Romeo Must Die" (2000). Li also teamed up again with Dmx in "Cradle to the Grave" (2003). A multi-dimensional Jet Li film called "The One" blended sci-fi with martial arts. This would not be the only flick with such a combustible mixture. There's a long-awaited 2007 film featuring Jet Li and Jackie Chan now being completed. All of these urban-based action movies featured lots of martial arts moves; more were on the way.
